Wanmo launches new First Thursday event for the Beijing advertising and marketing community to join in the discussion about key issues facing their industry in 2009


First Thursday is a new monthly salon event for Beijing focusing on issues relating to brand advertising and marketing in China. It's also a great excuse to get away from the office for 2 hours once a month to have fun while learning.

SPEAKER BIO'S

JEREMY GOLDKORN, DANWEI.ORG - MODERATOR

Jeremy Goldkorn founded the China media website Danwei.org, and acts as editor and publisher. The site has tracked the changes in China's media and Internet on an almost daily basis since 2003. He is also the director of the New Media department for Swiss media company Ringier's Chinese operations.

A native of South Africa, Goldkorn moved to China in 1995. He has lived in a workers dormitory, ridden a bicycle across Xinjiang and Tibet, and spent the last decade working in the Chinese media, advertising and Internet industries. He produced the documentary African Boots of Beijing. He is frequently profiled in the Chinese media, while the Western press regularly solicit his views on media regulation, Internet business, freedom of expression, and the habits of young Chinese Internet users (see our press coverage page). Goldkorn is a regular public speaker at both Chinese- and English-language conferences and events.

LAWRENCE WAN, OMD

As the Digital Director of OMD, Greater China, Lawrence launched and manages the OMD Digital unit, which includes up-leveling OMD's operations to offer full-scale digital media solutions. Previous to his role at OMD, Lawrence was the Business Manager at PCCW Directories Limited, managing interactive strategic planning, along with launching PCCW Directories search engine marketing business in partnership with Google and Yahoo!. Other prior digital marketing experience included launching Effisis Limited, Hong Kong's first pay-per-click contextual search advertising network, Associate Media Director at Euro RSCG Hong Kong, and Manager - Media, Marketing and Communications for Modem Media's Hong Kong office. Outside of work, Lawrence actively evangelizes digital advertising and marketing. Currently he is the president of the International Advertising Association (IAA) HK Chapter, and committee advisor at the Asian Digital Marketing Association (ADMA).

PAUL DENLINGER, CHINA VORTEX.COM

Paul Denlinger has worked more than 15 years in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in both Chinese and western companies, and has participated in the dramatic growth and development of several Chinese internet companies. These companies are all listed in the US, and have an aggregate market cap of US$5 billion.

Born in Seattle, he was educated in the US, Taiwan and graduated from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He is bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and English.

After graduating from university, he worked at Ogilvy & Mather Advertising in Taiwan, where he worked on hi-tech accounts. When the Internet wave started, he moved to Silicon Valley, where he joined a pre-IPO US-based Chinese language Internet company, Sinanet, as a consultant. At the time, the company was looking for a strategy to expand its presence; he recommended the company establish a presence in China. It soon merged with a Chinese software company, becoming Sina.com, now the largest online media portal in China.

Later, he joined chinadotcom, the first China-play company to list on Nasdaq, as its vice president of product management, where he oversaw the rapid growth of that portal in China. While there, he also recommended investments; one early-stage company he assisted was Shanda Interactive Entertainment, which is now China's largest online gaming company.

In 2003, he founded his own strategic investment consulting company, China Business Strategy (http://www.china-ready.com) to advise companies entering the China market, as well as Chinese companies going global.

ROSS GEARING, TBWA
For 14 years, Ross has been working in marketing and advertising agencies. Previously Ross worked for 8 years in the UK insurance industry.

As a British national, Ross started his marketing career in London, where his interest and knowledge of technology combined with a degree in Business specializing in marketing led him from direct marketing to database marketing.

After 2 years direct marketing in London, Ross has spent the last 12 years in agency roles across Asia Pacific, including over 6 years in China.

Ross has spent the past 5 years working at TBWA\TEQUILA\China in both Shanghai and Beijing. In this time Ross has worked on Chivas Regal, Nissan, Infiniti, Cow & Gate Infant Milk, Apple, Etihad Airways, China Unicom, SanDisk and unicef.

STEVEN TURNER, OGILVY PR

Stephen brings to Ogilvy Public Relations 15 years of experience studying, traveling and working in Asia. He draws from his rich public relations experience and knowledge of business in China to provide communications expertise for Ogilvy PR's corporate clients.

At Ogilvy PR, Stephen leads the Corporate Practice Group with responsibility for the overall management of a portfolio of MNC and local clients.

Throughout his twelve years at Ogilvy PR, Stephen has accumulated experience in communications campaign planning and management, media relations and strategy, event planning, crisis management, media training, and regional network planning and services. He combines his knowledge of public relations with professionals from other Ogilvy disciplines to provide his clients with integrated marketing plans essential for developing their competitive advantage in the China market.

In addition to client service, Stephen is responsible for planning staff development and training as well as contributing to organizational management as a member of the Ogilvy PR China Executive Committee.

Stephen grew up in the UK and received a Master's Degree in Chinese Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
